Sudan Gurung Early Life
Sudan Gurung belongs to Nepal’s Gurung (Tamu) community, an ethnic group rooted in Himalayan culture and traditions. Before becoming an activist, Sudan was part of Nepal’s nightlife, running the OMG nightclub and working as a DJ and event organizer.
The 2015 Nepal earthquake was the turning point in his life. He lost his child in the disaster, an experience he later described as unforgettable and life-changing. This personal tragedy pushed him away from entertainment and into civic work, setting the foundation for his activism.
Career
Sudan Gurung’s career can be divided into two phases: nightlife and activism.
- Nightlife career: Before 2015, he owned OMG nightclub in Kathmandu and worked as a DJ and event organizer.
- Shift to activism: The earthquake of 2015 changed his path. He mobilized nearly 200 volunteers through social media, which led to the formation of Hami Nepal, a youth-driven NGO.
Hami Nepal began with disaster relief but expanded into civic activism, focusing on transparency, accountability, and youth mobilization. Sudan also played a key role in the Ghopa Camp protest in Dharan and in organizing efforts to bring home Nepalis stranded abroad.

In September 2025, Sudan became the central figure in Nepal’s Gen Z protests against the government’s social media ban. He organized peaceful demonstrations where students carried books and wore school uniforms to symbolize knowledge and unity. The protests led to the lifting of the ban and the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, making Sudan one of the most influential civic leaders in Nepal.

Controversies
Sudan Gurung himself has not been involved in personal scandals, but the protests he led in 2025 turned violent despite his calls for peace. Clashes with police left at least 19–22 people dead and over 300 injured in Kathmandu. While critics questioned his ability to control the crowds, most observers acknowledged that outside elements had escalated the situation.
His push against corruption and nepotism, especially with hashtags like #NepoKid, also stirred debate but further established him as a fearless youth leader.
