Smita Patil began her career in the 1970s as a newsreader on Doordarshan television in Mumbai. Her first film was a student film called “Teevra Madhyam,” directed by Arun Khopkar, who was a student at FTII (Film and Television Institute of India).

After this, Shyam Benegal discovered her and cast her in the film “Charandas Chor” in 1974. Patil’s first lead role was in the film “Manthan,” where she played the character of a Harijan woman. Before this, she had a small role in the film “Nishant,” but it was a very minor role.
