Early Life Story

Sufi Motiwala was born on October 9, 2003, in Mangalore, Karnataka. His family belongs to the Bohra Shia community, a Gujarati Muslim mercantile group with deep roots in the pearl and trade business.

He spent his early childhood in Mangalore before moving to Surat, Gujarat, where he lived from around third grade through tenth grade. He later moved to pursue his education and career in larger cities.

By the time he was 15 or 16, Sufi had already decided he wanted to become a fashion editor. His interest in celebrity styling, red carpet looks, and fashion commentary developed naturally during his school years.

He is also a Hafiz-e-Quran — meaning he has memorized the entire Quran. He has spoken openly about reconciling his Islamic faith with his identity as a queer Muslim, describing this as a deeply personal and ongoing journey. ¹

Sufi’s family has a remarkable history. His maternal grandfather, Abdul Husain Motiwala, moved from Saurashtra to Bombay as a teenager with only five rupees. He started as a shop worker in a pearl-dealing business, eventually bought the shop, and became one of the most respected businessmen in the Bohra community.

His father, Ahmed Zardi, was a professional photographer who ran Studio Dayzars in Bombay Central for over three decades. His mother, Rubab, was the youngest daughter of Abdul Husain Motiwala.

His cousin Mohammed Hussain, known professionally as Official Sane, is a successful stand-up comedian and writer. His cousin-in-law Mariam is a celebrity stylist who has worked with Bollywood personalities. This creative family environment helped shape Sufi’s interest in fashion and media from a young age.

He has spoken about his relationship with his parents going through a rough phase when he came out but later becoming one of mutual respect. He has credited them for treating him as their son and as a human being throughout. ²

Education

Sufi completed his schooling in Surat and later did his pre-university studies in Mangalore. He then enrolled in a Fashion Communication degree at Amity University in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

He began creating fashion commentary content on Instagram while still studying, building his audience organically through consistent and opinionated content.

Professional Journey

Starting Out as a Fashion Commentator

Sufi began posting fashion critique videos on Instagram around 2021. His tone was blunt, funny, and unapologetically direct — very different from the usual polite PR-friendly reviews.

His content focused on celebrity outfits, red carpet looks, and influencer fashion choices. Gen Z audiences connected with his honest style immediately.

His first major viral moment came when he praised content creator Nancy Tyagi’s Cannes look over the looks of established Bollywood celebrities. The video spread widely and brought him nationwide attention. ³

Signing with Dharma Cornerstone Agency

In 2024, Sufi was signed by the Dharma Cornerstone Agency (DCA) — a talent management company co-founded by Karan Johar and Bunty Sajdeh that manages the next generation of digital creators. This gave him access to high-value brand deals and mainstream industry connections.

The Traitors (2025)

In June 2025, Sufi made his OTT debut on The Traitors India, hosted by Karan Johar on Amazon Prime Video. He was one of the youngest contestants on the show.

His most talked-about moment was his confrontation with rapper Raftaar, who tried to dismiss him as a “sidekick.” Sufi’s calm but firm response went viral and was widely praised as a strong moment of self-assertion by a young creator. ⁴

Acting Debut in Do You Wanna Partner (2025)

In September 2025, Sufi made his scripted acting debut in the Amazon Prime Video series Do You Wanna Partner, produced by Dharmatic Entertainment. The show starred Tamannaah Bhatia and Diana Penty. Sufi played the role of Firdaus Makujina — the brother of Diana Penty’s character Anahita.

Sufi Motiwala at Cannes Film Festival (2026)

In May 2026, Sufi made his debut at the Cannes Film Festival as a fashion creator — one of the few Indian digital influencers to attend at such a young age.⁵

Uorfi Javed DM Controversy — In July 2024, Uorfi Javed publicly accused Sufi of sending her a vulgar direct message. Sufi apologized and claimed the message was accidentally sent to the wrong person. Their friction continued on The Traitors, where Uorfi accused him of playing the “victim card.” ⁶

Raftaar Confrontation on The Traitors — Rapper Raftaar attempted to dismiss Sufi as a “sidekick” during the show. Sufi’s firm on-camera response went viral and divided audiences — some praised his confidence while others felt he was being disrespectful to a senior artist. ⁷
