Rida Tharana Background

Early Life Story

Rida Tharana was born on September 10, 1998, in Polibetta, a small village in the Kodagu (Coorg) district of Karnataka. She grew up in a modest household where evenings were lit by lanterns due to frequent power cuts and entertainment was limited to an old television and early computers.

As a child, Rida was shy and underconfident. She recalls being too nervous to perform on stage and was often left out of school events because she was not an academic topper. These experiences of being overlooked became a strong motivation for everything she built later.

The shift into her teenage years brought a wave of societal expectations. Like many girls in rural Karnataka, she was expected to focus on marriage and household roles rather than a career. But she had different plans.

Family Background

Rida’s father worked his way up from humble beginnings. He completed a degree in Electrical Engineering and later an MBA from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in Mumbai. He went on to build a long corporate career and currently holds a senior leadership position at a subsidiary of TATA.

Her mother played a central role in shaping her understanding of societal norms and gendered expectations during her childhood years. In recent years, their relationship has grown closer. Rida has taken on a caregiver role for her mother, who has been dealing with illness, and has spoken about the emotional significance of seeing her mother happy and surrounded by friends.

Her elder sister has recently entered the content creation space as well, though she has faced separate controversies related to colorism — a contrast to Rida’s well-known advocacy for dark-skin celebration.

Education

Rida completed her schooling in Coorg. When it came time for higher secondary education, she made a bold move — she relocated to Bengaluru for 11th and 12th grade, against her parents’ initial wishes. This decision led to a period where she was financially cut off from family support.

To fund her university education, Rida independently secured a ₹3 lakh education loan. Her paternal uncle signed the papers and helped convince her father to allow the move. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology and Genetics from Garden City University, Bengaluru. Though she finished the degree, she eventually realized her true calling was in public-facing work — not the laboratory.

Professional Journey

Starting Out: Emcee and Modeling (2015–2020)

Rida started working at the age of 17 out of financial necessity. After moving to Bengaluru, she needed money for hostel fees and daily expenses. She began as an event promoter, earning ₹1,000 per day.

Her first experience as an emcee was, by her own admission, “terrible” — she struggled with stuttering on stage. But she persisted. Over the next six years, she hosted more than 500 shows and became a recognized emcee in the Bengaluru event circuit. During this same period, she also pursued modeling, winning the Best Model title at regional pageants for two consecutive years.

Digital Career (2020–Present)

The COVID-19 pandemic brought the live events industry to a halt. With no shows to host, Rida turned to Instagram. She began creating videos on everyday topics — spoken with clarity, confidence, and strong opinions on patriarchy, self-worth, and women’s freedom.

The response was immediate. By January 2021, she had reached 100,000 followers. She made content creation her full-time profession shortly after. Her audience grew rapidly, resonating particularly with young South Asian women navigating similar pressures. By 2026, she had crossed 1.6 million followers on Instagram and over 529,000 subscribers on YouTube.

Cannes Film Festival (2026)

In May 2026, Rida made her international debut by walking the red carpet at the 79th Cannes Film Festival, attending the screening of La Vie D’Une Femme. She wore a custom gown by Indian designer Nikhil Gajare, featuring an intricate 3D seashell-inspired design with a strapless corset.1
