Marcus Freeman was born at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and grew up in Huber Heights, near Dayton. His father, Michael Freeman, served in the U.S. Air Force, and his mother, Chong, moved from South Korea to the U.S. after meeting Michael overseas.

Marcus Freeman Career
Marcus Freeman’s football career began as a standout linebacker at Ohio State. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2009 and briefly played with the Bills and Texans before retiring in 2010 due to a heart condition.
He turned to coaching, starting as a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 2010. He later coached linebackers at Kent State and Purdue, where he became co-defensive coordinator. At Cincinnati (2017–2020), his defenses ranked among the nation’s best, which made him one of the most respected young coaches in the country.
Notre Dame hired Freeman as defensive coordinator in 2021, and later that year, he became the program’s head coach. His tenure so far has been marked by steady success:
