Dr. Cheyenne Bryant Background
Early Life Story
Dr. Cheyenne Bryant was born on September 6, 1982, in San Pedro, a coastal neighborhood of Los Angeles. Her parents were teenage sweethearts — her father Darren was 16 and her mother was 17 when she was born.1
She has spoken openly about growing up as a “broken child” who became a “broken adult” before finding her path through education and self-healing. These experiences became the foundation of her career in psychology and life coaching.
Growing up in San Pedro, she was part of a small African-American minority in the neighborhood. This shaped her early awareness of the importance of representation — something that would later drive her community activism.
She was the first person in her family on her mother’s side to attend college and earn a doctorate degree.
Family Background
Her father, Darren De Shan Bryant, was a Longshoreman who also ran businesses including a beauty salon and real estate with his wife Michelle. He was deeply respected in his community and passed away on November 11, 2023.2
Her mother, La’Kesia Rambo Barrett, is a Minister. Her mother’s faith background strongly influenced Cheyenne’s integration of spirituality and psychology in her coaching style.
Cheyenne is open about her personal life. She was in a ten-year relationship and was once engaged, but called off the wedding after realizing her partner was not the right person. She has publicly stated she prefers to remain single rather than compromise on her standards.
Education
Cheyenne enrolled in college at just 17 years old at California State University, Northridge. She earned a double degree in Psychology and Pan-African Studies, graduating in 2009. 3
She then completed a Master’s in Marriage, Family, and Child Therapy at the University of Phoenix. Midway through her Master’s, she realized that her deep interest in psychology was rooted in her own need for healing — a moment that transformed her entire approach to the field.
She later earned her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University, fulfilling her childhood dream of becoming “Dr. Bryant.”
Professional Journey
Early Career
After graduating, Cheyenne volunteered at youth state facilities and at-risk youth programs. She worked directly with young people facing emotional and social challenges.
She spent over 12 years as a Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist before transitioning into life coaching. During this period, she noticed that traditional therapy focused heavily on past trauma but often lacked practical, present-day strategies — while life coaching had great goal-setting tools but ignored deeper psychological pain. This gap led her to create her own approach.
The Hybrid Modality
Cheyenne developed and trademarked what she calls the “Hybrid Modality” — a framework that combines therapeutic processing of past trauma with forward-focused life coaching.
She now teaches this method through the Dr. Bryant Institute (DBI) and offers a Hybrid Life Coaching Certification Program to train others.
In 2014, she also founded the Dr. Bryant Team, personally funding the distribution of hygiene kits, clothing, and food to disadvantaged communities in Los Angeles.
Television and Media
Cheyenne’s national media career grew through her role as co-producer and life coach on MTV’s Teen Mom Family Reunion. The show was nominated for Best Unscripted Reality Show.
She hosts her own talk show, In Session with Dr. Bryant, and has appeared on major platforms including The Breakfast Club, Club Shay Shay, and has been featured in Forbes, Oprah Magazine, HuffPost, USA Today, and People.
She ranks within the top 5,200 Instagram influencers in the United States and is ranked #116 in the Health and Medicine category.
NAACP Leadership
Cheyenne serves as President of NAACP Branch #1069, representing the San Pedro and Wilmington communities of Los Angeles.
In February 2023, she led the “NAACP Square” street dedication at the intersection of West Third and South Mesa Streets in San Pedro. The event was attended by Mayor Karen Bass and honored the 114th anniversary of the NAACP. She is the first and only person in the world to have this distinction. 4
She also authored the Mental Health Diversion Resolution, which was passed at the NAACP National level. It advocates for mental health resources as an alternative to prison sentencing for non-violent offenders.
