Anish Kumar is a British-Indian electronic music producer and DJ from Newcastle, known for weaving Bollywood samples into house, disco and breakbeat records. He built his early sound alone on a laptop, sending demos to radio stations for years before “Little Miss Dynamite” won him BBC Radio 1’s Hottest Record spot in 2021. That song opened the door to a full-time career in music.

Anish Kumar Early Life and Background
Growing up in Newcastle, Anish Kumar was part of a British-Indian family. He started making music around age ten, spending hours on GarageBand and burning his tracks onto homemade EPs, complete with his own cover art. That habit of building a full project, not just a single track, stuck with him for years.
Music stayed a bedroom hobby for a long time. He grew up listening online rather than going out to clubs, taking in disco, Northern soul and Bollywood records from the 1980s and 90s, sounds that still shape his production today. His parents, he’s said, are quietly proud of how he has folded that South Asian influence into his work.

Anish Kumar Education
Kumar studied veterinary medicine at the University of Cambridge, a six-year course he began before music took over his evenings and weekends. He kept at both, finishing his veterinary degree in 2024 while touring and releasing records on the side.

Anish Kumar Career
Kumar’s break came in 2021, while he was halfway through his veterinary degree. He had been emailing homemade EPs to radio DJs almost every night for months, and one of those songs, “Little Miss Dynamite,” reached broadcaster Annie Mac, who named it her Hottest Record on BBC Radio 1. The following months brought a wave of interest from labels, promoters and fellow producers.
His profile grew fast after that. “Blackpool Boulevard,” a 2021 collaboration with Barry Can’t Swim, picked up support from Pete Tong and Danny Howard and pushed him further into the UK dance scene. He released the Postcards EP in 2022 and A Mixtape by Anish Kumar in 2023, both built around his sample-heavy, Bollywood-tinged style. He also teamed up with Armenian producer Hagop Tchaparian on the track Kino, and scored a Prada advert after a chance meeting following a New York show.

Kumar later released AK Cuts, a four-part anthology of club tracks that wrapped up to a positive response from dance music press. He signed with Wasserman Music for representation and sold out his debut headline show at Peckham’s Carpet Shop in half an hour. But he says his real goal is to make albums with a live band, not just DJ sets, though DJing remains a big part of how his music reaches people.
