On December 25, 1996, Patsy Ramsey discovered a ransom note demanding $118,000, a figure oddly similar to John’s bonus. Later, John found JonBenet’s body in the basement. She had been strangled with a homemade garrote and suffered a fractured skull. The note was written on paper from Patsy’s stationery.
Police initially suspected the family, leading to years of speculation about a possible cover-up. Theories included Burke’s involvement, Patsy’s role, or an unknown intruder. A 1999 grand jury even voted to indict the parents, but the district attorney declined to prosecute due to insufficient evidence.
In 2003, DNA testing pointed to an unknown male suspect, and in 2008, the district attorney officially cleared the Ramsey family. Despite new leads and thousands of tips, the case remains unsolved, with advanced DNA testing still being pursued.
